The OWASP Top 10, Explained for Business Leaders
The OWASP Top 10 gives business and engineering teams a shared starting point for discussing application risk. It does not replace a test plan tailored to your application.
What it is
An awareness resource covering important web application risk categories, maintained by the Open Worldwide Application Security Project. It is not a compliance standard, a complete testing checklist, or a security guarantee.
Broken access control can let users read or change data they are not entitled to access. For multi-tenant applications, verify object ownership, tenant boundaries and server-side authorization instead of relying on the interface to hide another user's data.
Four risks to discuss with your team
These are selected examples, not the complete category list or a claim about their prevalence in your environment. Use the current OWASP edition when agreeing assessment coverage.
- Broken access control — users reading or changing another user's or tenant's data without authorization.
- Injection — untrusted input being interpreted as instructions by a query engine, interpreter or other component.
- Security misconfiguration — unsafe defaults, unnecessary exposure or errors that disclose internal details.
- Software dependencies and supply chains — third-party components and their build or delivery paths require inventory, integrity controls and risk review.
Three questions to ask your team
- "When did we last test access control across user roles and tenants — manually, not with a scanner?"
- "How do we know which of our dependencies have known vulnerabilities right now?"
- "If a tester chained two medium findings into account takeover, would our monitoring notice?"
An agreed assessment can investigate these questions using selected OWASP guidance and application-specific tests. Confirm which questions, roles, systems and monitoring checks are in scope; a Top 10 label alone does not establish coverage.
