ISO 27001 vs SOC 2: which one first?

ISO/IEC 27001 certification and SOC 2 reports answer different assurance needs. Start with the exact customer requirement, service boundary, report period and intended reader rather than assuming one is always the better choice.

The short version

ISO 27001 is an international standard for an information security management system. A certification body can independently audit the defined ISMS scope and decide whether to issue certification. Check the body's accreditation and the scope your customer requires.

SOC 2 is an examination report, not a certificate. An independent licensed CPA firm examines a service organisation's system and controls against the applicable Trust Services Criteria. Type I and Type II differ in whether operating effectiveness over a period is examined.

How to choose

  • Confirm the requirement: ask which certificate or report, scope, criteria and period the buyer will accept.
  • Review the operating model: identify the systems, people, risks and evidence each route needs.
  • Plan the sequence: agree dependencies and realistic timing with the selected certification body or CPA firm. A shorter report type is not automatically an acceptable substitute.

The good news

Risk assessment, policies, access management, monitoring and vendor review can provide useful shared foundations. Map each requirement explicitly: overlapping evidence does not make the standards interchangeable or guarantee readiness. See the ISO overview and AICPA SOC guidance.
